What are common types of resurfacing knee surgery?

Many people choose knee resurfacing surgery because it often allows them to keep more of their own knee cartilage and bone. That’s why many younger people choose this option instead of total knee replacement surgery.

In general, there are two main types of knee resurfacing surgical procedures:

You can learn more about both procedures by clicking on the links above. In general, we strongly advise you to consult with one of our physicians as soon as possible to discuss whether knee resurfacing surgery is right for your specific medical condition.

We can diagnose what’s wrong when we examine you. To better determine what’s wrong with your knee, that often involves taking an MRI scan of your knee. That’s why each one of our seven New York offices is equipped with an MRI machine.

Bicompartmental Knee Resurfacing

Bicompartmental knee resurfacing surgery can be effective, less invasive alternative to total knee replacement surgery. Your knee surgeon may recommend bicompartmental knee resurfacing if you have moderate osteoarthritis in two out of three knee compartments and other, non-surgical treatment options have not relieved your knee pain.

This surgical knee procedure often provides relief to people experiencing knee pain due to arthritis since the surface of the knee joint or knee cartilage is no longer smooth, often due to normal wear and tear.

Bicompartmental knee resurfacing surgery involves smoothing out the rough edges inside your knee. That way, your knee can move smoothly again and hopefully you no longer feel any pain in your knee or other surrounding parts in your leg.

There are many reasons why you may want to consider bicompartmental knee resurfacing surgery. Specifically, this surgical procedure will allow you to keep more of your natural bone, cartilage and ligaments in your knee. As a result, many younger, active patients choose to undergo this procedure since they can often resume moving normally sooner and often have a shorter recovery time.

In addition, if you decide later to undergo total knee replacement (TKR) surgery in the future, bicompartmental knee resurfacing will not affect your ability to undergo TKR surgery. Bicompartmental knee resurfacing surgery sometimes can be performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you would not have to stay overnight in a hospital.

Partial Knee Resurfacing

This knee resurfacing procedure is often recommended if you only need one of your three knee compartments resurfaced, often due to osteoarthritis. A procedure like this is often done because one part of your knees has rough surfaces, which results in knee pain when you move.

In many cases, partial knee resurfacing involves making the rough surfaces of the femur, tibia or kneecap (patella) smoother, resulting in pain-free movement. This relatively non-invasive surgical procedure often results in a quicker recovery time compared to total knee replacement (TKR) surgery. Often, there’s also less scar tissue and less blood loss.

Complications can sometimes occur due to partial knee resurfacing, including infections, blood clots and ligament injuries. That’s why it’s important to discuss the different options available to you with one of our experienced, New York orthopedic knee surgeons. We can explain which surgical procedure makes the most sense for you.
