Physiotherapy Knee Treatment

Our NYC orthopedic knee surgeons and licensed physiatrists can develop a physical therapy plan for you

One of the most common – and most effective – non-surgical knee injury treatments is physiotherapy, also known as physical therapy. This particular knee injury medical procedure might seem straightforward. It is important that your physiotherapy treatment is done properly under the proper supervision. Otherwise, you could aggravate your knee injury or hurt another part of your body.

That’s why all seven office locations at IMC Bone Doc have a fully-licensed physical therapist and advanced physical therapy equipment. That way, we can develop a physiotherapy knee treatment plan designed for you based on your specific physical needs and medical condition. And best of all, you can receive the physical therapy you need at a location convenient for you.

Our physiatrists and physicians at Island Musculoskeletal Care know what to do because we’ve been doing this work for decades. In particular, our doctors have more than 100 years of combined medical experience.

Don’t delay. Talk to one of our doctors today. We often have same day appointments available at our seven New York offices. Best of all, you can often receive all your medical care at the same, convenient location.

What are common physical therapy exercises for knee injuries?

There are many effective physical therapy exercises designed to improve your movement, encourage healing and relieve knee pain. Some of the most common knee exercises designed to address your knee pain after knee surgery or as an alternative to surgery include:

  • Ankle pump – This exercise involves sitting on a flat surface and stretching your legs out while slowly moving your foot backwards and forwards.
  • Knee squat – Using a chair, table or another sturdy surface, squat down several inches and slowly bend at the knees. Repeat this exercise at least 10 times if possible.
  • Knee extensions – Sitting on the edge of a chair with your feet flat on the ground, slowly slide one knee forward on the floor and gently lift your knee into the air until your leg is straight. If possible, hold this position for 10 to 15 seconds before slowly returning your leg to the initial position.
  • Passive knee extension – Sit on one chair and rest your leg on another chair positioned directly in front of you. Your leg should be straight and parallel to the ground. Hold this position, if possible, for 10 to 15 seconds or longer.
  • Quadricep stretch – In a standing position near a wall, lean against the wall with one hand and using the hand to hold your ankle and bend your foot towards your buttocks.
  • Step ups – Using a step stool, slowly step up and down several times onto the stool one leg at a time.
  • Straight leg raises – Lie on your back, bend one knee and lift the other leg straight off the ground several inches. Hold your legs in this position for five seconds, then perform the same exercise with the opposite legs.

These are just a few examples of common physical therapy exercises for knee injuries. Each person’s physical therapy regimen is unique. That’s why it’s important to consult with your doctor before beginning physical therapy.

Do not attempt performing any of these knee exercises without first consulting your knee doctor. You could sustain a serious injury if you make a mistake or strain your knee or another body part.
