What is partial meniscectomy knee surgery?

One of the most common knee injuries is a torn meniscus. The meniscus is a piece of cartilage (known as the menisci) which serves as barrier between the thighbone (femur) and the shinbone (tibia). The meniscus can become injured or torn, especially if a person rotates or twists their knee too fast. Athletes in particular are at a high risk of tearing their meniscus.

Partial meniscectomy knee surgery involves removing the torn part of the meniscus and smoothing out the rough edges of the remaining part of the meniscus. That way, the rest of person’s knee will be able to move freely without being in pain.

Partial meniscectomy knee surgery is a type of arthroscopic surgery. As a result, a small camera is normally inserted into a small incision in the knee. Small, surgical instruments are then inserted into a second small incision in order to operate and repair the knee.

How do I know if I need partial meniscectomy knee surgery?

The only way you will know for sure if you need partial meniscectomy knee surgery is if you have a doctor examine you and diagnose what’s wrong. You may suspect something’s wrong if you notice any of the following symptoms of a torn meniscus:

  • A pop-like sound or sensation in your knee
  • Pain in your knee when rotating or twisting your leg
  • Difficulty straightening your leg
  • Stiffness in your knee

If something feels wrong, seek immediate medical attention. Most likely, imaging tests (including X-rays and/or MRIs) will need to be conducted in order to determine if your meniscus is torn and the severity of your injury. That’s why we have an MRI machine in each one of our seven New York office locations – to better diagnose exactly what’s wrong with your knee in a timely manner.
