What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy?
Our blood contains three, important ingredients – red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Platelets include special proteins which naturally help promote soft tissue healing in a person’s body.
In platelet rich plasma knee therapy, a blood sample is often taken from a person’s arm. The platelets in the blood are then separated out using specialized devices. This process normally takes 10 to 15 minutes. The highly concentrated, platelet rich plasma is then injected back into the person’s knee in an effort to promote soft tissue healing in the knee.
In a normal person’s body, platelets normally make up six percent of a person’s blood stream. Platelet rich blood injected back into someone undergoing PRP therapy often contains 94 percent platelets.
What are the benefits of PRP knee therapy?
Studies have suggested that PRP therapy can help promote healing to injured tendons, ligaments and muscles. This is especially true for people suffering from knee osteoarthritis and chronic knee pain.
What are the side effects of PRP knee therapy?
Side effects are normally mild, since the platelets being injected back into someone’s knee are their own platelets. As a result, most people undergoing platelet rich plasma therapy rarely have an adverse reaction.
Some patients may experience certain side effects after undergoing PRP therapy, including:
- Temporary discomfort in their knee for several days after the procedure
- Mild inflammation in their knee after undergoing the procedure
- Scar tissue on the affected knee
